Of Luxury Items Overpriced Per-Use

The Process

1

Calculate Total Cost

Include purchase price, alterations, care products, and any maintenance costs over the item's expected lifetime.

2

Estimate Usage

Be realistic about how often you'll use the item per year, and for how many years. Multiply uses per year by expected years of utility.

3

Factor Resale Value

Research what the item retains on the secondary market after your expected ownership period. Subtract this from total cost.

4

Divide and Decide

Net cost divided by total uses gives you cost-per-wear. Compare across alternatives. The lowest number wins — not the lowest price tag.
